Tell us you have moved home

If you are moving home, you will need to tell the council at the address you’re leaving and register for the council at your new address.

Moving home can often be a difficult process when it should be an exciting time as you prepare to move into your new home. The fastest and most efficient way to tell us about your move is to use our online form.

Depending on the circumstances of your move you will need to select one of the following options within our Online Council Tax Service.

  • moving within Milton Keynes
  • moving into Milton Keynes
  • moving out of Milton Keynes

If you are already registered with us to pay Council Tax, you will need your Council Tax Account Number to complete the form.

Online Council Tax Services

What happens next?

Once you have completed your online application there is no need to contact us, we will contact you directly if we need more information. A new bill will be either sent to the new property address or contact address once the account is set up.

If you have already set up for paperless billing, you will be notified by email

If you’re moving inside of Milton Keynes:

  • we will usually cancel your current council tax account and issue you a new account reference for the new property address.

  • if you have paid too much, we will either transfer or send a refund to your new address.

  • If you have paid too little Council Tax at your old address, we will send you a new bill for each address.

  • we can transfer your Direct Debit payment details from your old address so that you do not have to set up a new arrangement

If you’re moving outside of Milton Keynes

  • we need to know the date you’re moving out, and your forwarding address

  • if you’ve paid too much Council Tax, we will send a refund to your new address

Paperless billing

While registering your new address, do not forget to register for paperless billing. Once you have registered your new address, you will be sent an email asking you to log into your account to view your bill.

Once you are in your account, you will also be able to set up a Direct Debit. This is our preferred method of collection, but you will not be able to do this until a new bill has been sent to you.

Paying by Direct Debit helps us to keep costs down and protect the valuable services we provide. It is easy, safe and means you never miss a payment.
