Understanding your Council Tax bill

Understanding Your Council Tax Bill

We issue a Council Tax bill when:

•    annual bills are produced in March
•    you tell us about a change of address, occupiers or tenants
•    you set up or cancel a Direct Debit
•    your Council Tax Reduction, discount or exemption changes

If the amount you need to pay changes, we will send you a new bill.
You must pay your Council Tax using the most recent bill you have received.

We have an Understanding your Council Tax bill video to help explain:

  • what each section of your bill means
  • how your charges are worked out
  • where to find key information, such as payment dates and instalments

Watch the short video below to understand your council tax bill.

You do not need to contact us to get a copy of your Council Tax bill.

You can view and download your current and previous bills through your My Council Tax Online account.

Annual bills are issued on the assumption that your circumstances will not change.

You must tell us if anything changes that could affect your Council Tax. This allows us to issue a new bill.

If any information on your bill is wrong, tell us using the Contact us form.

You must continue to pay your bill while we look at your request.

If you do not tell us about changes to your circumstances, a penalty may be added to your account.

You can choose to receive your Council Tax bills online instead of by post.

Paperless billing is quick and secure and helps us reduce costs so we can continue to provide essential services.

To use paperless billing, you must have a My Council Tax Online account. This allows you to view your bills online at any time.

If you choose paperless billing, you will not receive paper bills by post.

Find out how to pay and manage your payments on the Pay Council Tax page.
